When working with living systems, we are constantly faced with the circularity of life – birth, growth, death, and decay – that allows life to come into existence, serve its purpose, and eventually give all that it has in order for new life to do the same. Just as grass, humans, livestock, and all living things round this circle, so too do our ideas, our beliefs, and our actions. Just as old oxidized forage must be grazed or trampled down to allow for regrowth, old ways of being must sometimes be let go to allow for our continued growth.

Entering in 2021, we’re making a concerted effort to give energy to those new ideas and beliefs that will best serve our context, while acknowledging those that served a purpose long ago but whose time has now come. There is lots to celebrate as this new year kicks off, and there is lots to unlearn. We look forward to all the continued growth that 2021 has to offer, both for everyone in our Savory Global Network and for you, our dedicated readers.

DIGGING IN
Unlearning
By: Abbey Smith, Savory Global Network Coordinator
At the Savory Institute, the team is taking Charles Eisenstein’s course: Unlearning For Change Agents. As a student in this course, I am currently on a "fast" from judgment and news. Taking a break from the news cycle to see the bigger picture and patterns, taking a break from judging myself, judging others, and trying to save the world from an ego-driven place. These narratives are the root of war, of conflict. They are about "othering," about a story of good and evil.

We ask instead: “What is it like to be you?”

I recognize that the story of saving the world through scale and big actions (and ego) may not be the way. Scaling down to act from love in our own lives, in small and ordinary ways, inviting people into another story—not a story of separation, but a story of connectedness—may be the best work we can do to build a better world.

This “fast” from judgment frees up so much energy!

It is exhausting judging everything. There is now time to enjoy people, to see them for who they are (not who they are not), to imagine, to dream, to play.

In 2021, we invite you to explore freeing yourself from judgment and enjoy the important work of building a beautiful world together. Thank you, Charles Eisenstein, for giving us this language to express our work.
